Safety Begins at the Bus Stop
  • Arrive 5 minutes early
  • Remain 5 giant steps from the road
  • Do not run and play, while waiting
  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop
  • Never stoop or bend to pick up something!
  • Use the handrail

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY RULES
  • OBEY THE DRIVER
    • Seats can be assigned by the driver


  • REMAIN SEATED FACING FORWARD  AT ALL TIMES


  • YOU MAY TALK QUIETLY,
  •       BUT ONLY WITH THOSE NEAR TO YOU


  • NO EATING, DRINKING, OR CHEWING GUM
    • Keep the bus clean


  • KEEP YOUR HANDS, FEET AND BELONGINGS
  •     TO YOURSELF AND INSIDE THE BUS


  • USE ACCEPTABLE LANGUAGE
  •      NO RUDE GESTURES OR TEASING

Obey the Driver
  • The driver is the boss of the bus.
  • Your bus driver is trying to get you to school and home safely.
  • You can help by listening to your bus driver and doing what he or she asks you to do.
  • The driver may assign seats on the bus.

Remain seated facing forward at all times.
  • Your back should touch the back of the seat.
  • Your book-bag and your hands should be in your lap.
  • You must facing the front of the bus for the whole ride.
  • You must stay seated for the entire trip.
  • You may not stand up or change seats.

You may talk quietly, but only with those near to you.
  • You may talk to the person sitting on the seat next to you.
  • You may not turn around to talk to the people behind you.
  • You need to use an inside voice at all times.
  • Loud voices may distract the driver.
  • Do not talk  to the driver while the bus is moving.

No eating, drinking, or chewing gum.
  • All food, including candy, should stay in your bookbag or lunchbox.


  • Chewing gum is not allowed at school or on the bus.


  • Keep the bus clean

Keep your hands, feet, and belongings to yourself and inside the bus.
  • Your hands should be in your lap.
  • Your feet should be in front of the seat, never in the aisle while you are seated.
  • You may not put your hands on another person.
  • Your things should stay in your bookbag.
  • If someone bothers you, get help from the driver.

Use acceptable language/no rude gestures or teasing.
  • Treat other people as you would like to be treated.
  • If other people tease you-they are wrong.
  • There should be no bad language on the bus.

Do Not Be Destructive
  • You are responsible for any damage to the bus.  Treat it with respect!

Exiting The Bus
  • Use the handrail
  • Beware the Bus Danger Zone
  • Cross in Front; never behind
  •     Wait for the driver’s safe crossing message

What will happen if I do not follow Bus Safety Rules?
    • The driver can correct your behavior by discussing it with you, changing your seat , or giving you another consequence.
    • The driver of your bus should talk to your parents about your behavior.  After 2 warnings-
    • The driver should write a Bus Conduct Report and turn it in to Mr. Brittingham or Mrs. Bixler.
    • This leads to-
    • Administrative Talk.  Also, your parents will be contacted by phone/  with a letter (or both).
    • Further offenses will result in loss of riding privileges- (1,3,5,10)

  • What should I do if someone is bothering me on the bus?
    • Do I need help from the driver?
    • Can I solve this myself?
    • Could I ignore this person?
    • Am I tattling or do I need help?

What Can Bus Drivers Do?
  • Follow the Indian River School District Transportation Handbook.
  • Assign seats and consistently insist that students sit in assigned seats. Change seat assignments as needed.
  • Be on the bus before students board
  • Stress to students the importance of getting on the bus and going right to their assigned seats.
  • Insist that all students are sitting down and facing forward before leaving the parking lot.  Do not leave until they are.

What if Students Break the Rules?
  • Remind students of Bus Safety Rules. Tell them when they have done something right.
  • Have a plan to handle minor discipline problems.
    • Change seats; have a front seat for students who cause problems.
  • Contact parents with phone call and/or Bus Conduct Parent Notice. Document phone calls.
  • Contact parents before problems become severe.
  • Ensure that younger students are close to the front, not in back with middle school students.

What if Students Break the Rules?
  • After previous procedures have been followed, document infractions on a Bus Conduct Form, noting previous steps taken to improve behavior on the bus.
  • Give completed Bus Conduct Form to an administrator. A conference with the student or students will be held.   Parents will receive a letter in the mail.
  • If another  infraction occurs within the next month, the student will be suspended from the bus.

  • Follow emergency procedures
  • Make sure your cell phones is on, works, and the  school has the right number
  • Call for assistance
    • Emergency services
    • School Principal
    • Transportation director
