POLICIES/PROCEDURES
- STUDENT ATTENDANCE: It is the philosophy of
the Indian River School District that pupils need to attend school if they are to learn.
It is our belief that by promoting regular school attendance during the early
childhood and adolescent years we will instill a responsibility in the individual to
attend work regularly once they reach adulthood and enter the workplace in our society.
Indian River School District students who are counted as being absent for TEN
(10) UNEXCUSED DAYS, NOT OCCURRENCES, WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EARN CREDITS FOR THE YEAR OR BE
PROMOTED TO THE NEXT GRADE.
- PARENTAL NOTES:
- 1. In the event of a student absence, the District
will require a parent/guardian note. If the absence extends beyond three consecutive
days, the parent/guardian must contact the school. When the student returns to
school, he/she must bring a parent/guardian note within two (2) school days documenting
the entire period of absence.
- 2. The student should provide a doctor's note to the
school nurse whenever a visit to a doctor has taken place during the school year.
- 3. Parent notes will be accepted for up to ten (10)
days throughout the school year. Additional documentation may be required to excuse
additional absences.
-
- BUS RULES: School Bus Safety Rules were
developed to ensure that all students are provided with a safe bus ride to and from
school. All students must follow the School Bus Safety Rules. Violations of
the School Bus Safety Rules can result in suspension from riding the bus.
- SCHOOL BUS SAFETY RULES:
- 1. Obey the driver.
- 2. Remain seated facing forward at all times.
- 3. You may talk quietly, but only with those near to
you.
- 4. No eating, drinking or chewing gum.
- 5. Keep your hands, feet, and belongings to yourself
and inside the bus.
- 6. Use acceptable language/no rude gestures or
teasing.
-
- STUDENT DRESS CODE:
- Students will be required at all times
to wear shoes or other appropriate footwear. No bare midriff clothing will be worn.
The bottom of the top garment and the top of the lower garment worn must meet
and overlap or be tucked inside one another. No undergarments shall be exposed.
No "tank tops" or garments resembling men's underwear or basketball
type shirts will be worn. No headgear, including hats, will be worn inside
the building. "Pics", combs or curlers cannot be worn in the hair; they
must be carried in the clothing or purse, out of sight. Wearing apparel,
footwear, or other accouterments usually associated with a person's dress must not be
obscene, vulgar, nor ethnically or sexually offensive. Sacrilegious prints,
suggestions of violence or drug use, and graffiti may not be worn. Pants and shorts
should fit at the waist and be worn at the waist. Shoes with laces must be tied.
- Students are expected to
exhibit cleanliness and good taste in personal appearance. Students are expected to
dress in such a manner that they will not be disruptive nor infringe upon the health and
safety of themselves or others. Parents are reminded that student behavior improves
as dress improves.
- Principals and assistant principals
shall make the final decision in their building as to whether or not student(s) attire is
appropriate and acceptable.
-
- EMERGENCY PLANS:
- Emergency plans are in place so that
staff and students are prepared for different kinds of emergency situations that could
occur. Emergency drills will occur throughout the school year. Emergency
exercises will include fire drills, severe weather drills, intruder inside the building
drills, intruder outside the building drills, bus evacuation drills, and building
evacuation drills.
- HOUSE BILL 322 (FORMERLY HB85):
- House Bill 322 is a State of Delaware
law that requires school administrators to report certain inappropriate student behaviors
to the Delaware State Police. Students in grades four and five must be reported to
the Delaware State Police if any of the following incidents should occur at school or on
the school bus.
- Assault against another student.
- Extortion against another student.
- Assault against an employee.
- Extortion against an employee.
- Offensive touching against an employee.
- Terroristic threatening against an
employee.
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade must be
reported to the State Police for:
- Possession of a dangerous instrument or
weapon.
- Possession of an unlawful controlled
substance.
- Students in grades four and five are informed about House
Bill 322 through classroom visits by the principal or assistant principal.
