COAST DAY, 2009 - ESSAY CONTEST

Deadline for Entries turned in to Mrs. Balback:  by September 21, 2009

Theme:  Facing Climate Change in Delaware

Our changing climate is an evolving issue for everyone - scientists, policymakers, and the public.  The impacts from climate change will vary regionally, but Delaware, with over 350 miles of shoreline, is particularly susceptible to the effects of sea-level rise along its many beaches and inland waterways.  Climate change also has the potential to affect Delaware's agriculture, wildlife, fisheries, water resources, and the health of its residents.

Delaware's coastal resources support our economy, benefit our health, and provide for our everyday needs.  With this in mind, we'd like to know what neat ideas students have for dealing with climate change in Delaware and along its coast.

Choose one effect climate change may have on Delaware and tell us your idea for helping limit that impact, or how to help Delaware prepare for and deal with the effects of climate change.

1.  Start by identifying a climate change - related issue and describe how Delaware may be affected by this issue, then
2.  Explain your solution(s) to helping prevent or deal with this issue.

Note:  Please include student's name, teacher's name, and school name on each entry.

Word count:  Up to 400 words - See Resource Web Site Links below.
